A little bead knowledge · 1 minute

What does one square in a pattern mean?

The short answer

A pattern grid describes positions in rows and columns. Each occupied cell has a color; each empty cell is left open. The full rectangle can contain more positions than the design has beads.

One occupied cell → one bead

7 × 7 = 49 positions. Only the colored positions need beads.

Keep these in mind

  • Width × height counts all positions, including empty ones.
  • Color codes identify the materials for occupied cells.
  • Squares, dots and hollow bead symbols can show the same positions. A drawn center hole does not make a bead empty.
